01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
About this place
Tucked along a quiet side street in Asakusa, Mugunghwa serves authentic Korean home-style dishes backed by warm, unpretentious hospitality. The sundubu-jjigae arrives bubbling hot, venting fragrant steam. Beneath the sharp kick of chili pepper lies a deep, savory broth that thoroughly soaks into the pillowy soft tofu. Diners can tailor the soup to their mood, opting for richer variations like horumon sundubu-jjigae enriched with beef offal, or sundubu ramen finished with noodles.
For dining with companions, the samgyeopsal set makes a satisfying centerpiece, cooked directly at the table by the staff until crisp and aromatic. Wrapping the pork in sanchu lettuce with ssamjang or sesame oil and salt brings out the richness of the meat, pairing naturally with beer or unpasteurized makgeolli. The menu also offers an array of dishes that work just as well as drinking snacks as they do for a full meal, including moist, tender slices of bossam boiled pork, half samgyetang chicken soup steeped in gentle broth, and fluffy steamed gyeran-jjim.
While the restaurant opens only in the evenings on weekdays, it operates continuously from midday on Saturdays and Sundays, making it equally convenient for weekend lunches. In this relaxed setting shaped by the owner's attentive care, sharing a spread of home-style Korean flavors alongside house-made kimchi and varied small dishes makes for a deeply comforting meal.
